We know that The Lightning Network nodes need to be actively connected on the Internet to perform operations. What happens when users can’t access the Internet?

A group of researchers from Florida International University says you don’t need the Internet to send Bitcoin. They have published a research paper detailing how Bitcoiners could use community wireless networks to transmit bitcoin. It’s called LNMESH

A Proof-Of-Concept implementation was presented where they successfully perform offline Lightning Network payments utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy and WiFi. For larger networks where users can be moving around, they proposed a uniform spanning tree based channel assignment approach.

Results of this approach shows that success rates of up to 95% are achievable when channels have enough liquidity with offline LN payments on mobile wireless mesh networks.

It’s interesting to see how much experimentation is taking place on the Lightning Network. We have already heard of The Machamkura project in Africa built by software developer Ngako, where Bitcoiners are using text-based phones with no Internet connection to send and receive bitcoin.

thats cool and i have made old steemit posts aboit how u can do btc txs with ham radio!

the future is using starlink and mesh networks with just eosio antelopeio and using xbtc in proton or pbtc on telos or even swap.btc as u can se satoshi txs with no fees
