A story of extreme mange and a full recovery

avatar

Mange, in case you don't know, is a parasite disease that attacks the hair follicles on dogs and other animals. It is a tiny, almost imperceptible insect that is similar to a tick in how it attacks but over time will kill the hair production capabilities of host animals. This leads to discomfort and extreme itchiness that leads to skin problems and even death because of breakages in the skin. This is most commonly seen in dogs but cats often end up with it as well but can recover on their own because of their rather extreme self-cleaning procedures.

Not long ago we brought in a dog named Noi who had lost nearly all of her coat because of it.

Because of her very friendly demeanor, Noi was pointed out to us by some villagers who wanted her to get some help, and we were happy to offer our services. We proceeded with medicated baths and medication to eliminate the parasites and it wasn't long before her coat started to come back. Since we were previously unfamiliar with this dog we do not know how long she was afflicted with the parasites, but seeing as how she only had a few tufts of hair remaining when we got her, we suspect it was for a very long time.

Although it is difficult to get her to stand still long enough for a photo because she is so excited whenever we come around, this is what she looks like today and has made a near full recovery!

A lot of the villagers do actually care about the dogs that roam their streets but they are unaware that a water bath or a bath with just regular soap isn't going to do the trick. There are specialized soaps that are for exactly this sort of affliction and of course tablets that will kill the insects from the inside out.

If you see a dog that has lost its hair, this is almost always the reason why especially in hot tropical countries like Thailand. So if you see one that is friendly in your neighborhood, please lend a helping hand with this very easy and inexpensive treatment! Or if you do not have the time or money, at least point it out to your local animal-welfare organization, if you have one there.

Glad Noi is doing well. I was at my parents house for couple of days during Christmas, for some reasons this time around the dog bark at me when I go for morning walk. When 1 dog started it, the rest of the other house dogs also started barking at me. One of them even got hostile getting very near and very aggressive. Never happen in my life. I had to turn back and stare at the dog, getting ready to put up a fight 😂 dogs usually like me, but this time not sure why that 1 asshole started it and now I'm the dog public enemy at that area. I'm hoping if you have any idea if this will happen and if there's anything I can do to be-friend with the hostile little guy.

throw a dog treat to it if you are interested in befriending it. Normally though, it is probably best to just keep your distance when animals are like that.

That is an extreme case and doesn't even resemble a dog and reminds me of a sheep. Mange cannot be taken lightly as our new adoption had a patch of fur missing so we had him tested and came back negative. This they said could be down to a new diet which was probably the case as he was raiding dustbins for a few weeks before we got him. Easy to treat if you get it early, but can spread so quickly as it is mites eating away at the animal.

Absolutely true. The problem with this and most other skin parasites on dogs or any other animal is that once it gets really bad it can be extremely difficult or even impossible to sort it out. You did the right thing by going to the vet and thanks again for adopting and not shopping for a dog!

I wasn't shopping for a dog it is just he is too big for adoption and he would have been put down.

What noble work, they have helped Noi, what a joy. Ivermectin is a solution to this disease known as scabies, it is terrible, I imagine it itches a lot, the dogs break and the wounds become infected with worms. Of course, ivermectin is for adult dogs with the exception of some breeds such as the Siberian wolf. For puppies it is contraindicated, that is why it is necessary to consult a veterinarian.

Thanks for that. The best part about the work that we do is that all of us love doing it! We don't get paid but the work itself is reward enough
