Food Banks Turning to Reserves to Stay Afloat

Food banks this holiday season are struggling to keep up with the demand and some of them have been dipping into their reserves to try and deliver to families who are in need. With inflation rising and the cost of food getting more expensive it means that more individuals and families are looking for help from food banks and other charities.

food banks running a budget deficit

Through the pandemic many more people started giving donations and money to food banks and other charities but that giving has since slowed down. There are many more people who are in need, from all different walks of life. A number of individuals who work full-time might be finding themselves turning to the food bank for the first time and what they are operating with now is unsustainable if they don't see more goods and money coming in.

Food has become simply too expensive for some families to afford and if inflation worsens this problem could get worse.

For one food bank in Oregon alone they are seeing about a 25% increase since last year, about double what they saw prior to the pandemic.

As those prices grow it does not only make it more difficult for individuals and families to afford food but it can also make it more difficult for food banks and other charities to continue gathering the supplies that they need to keep up with demand as well.

Those food banks get a first look at the low income communities, the working poor etc, and how they are tackling the current unraveling state of affairs. There is widespread pain with many families struggling with insufficient incomes to keep up with inflation and the changing cost of living. With how some are operating right now it could be a difficult time ahead for them if they see more increase in demand and cost.

Everyone should get a proper salary. Especially the working people. If the prices of the foods are constantly increasing, but the salary is not, then the whole system will collapse over time. There will be chaos. Hungry, starving people will steal foods from the stores, etc.

Easier said than done. If you don't understand the mechanisms of inflation and trade controls, you'll never address the root problems. This is in large part the fallout from massive inflation, trade shocks, and prior price controls related to COVID policy.
