Fooling around with ChatGPT

I've been seeing quite a few mentions in various places lately about ChatGPT. Eventually, my interest was piqued enough to dig in. ChatGPT is an AI bot by OpenAI. I once knew, then forgot, then remembered, that OpenAI is yet another Elon Musk endeavor.

Anyway, ChapGPT is a beta project where the user, you, enter a prompt and the AI returns a result. The reason it's called "Chat"GPT is because the intent is that things look, feel, and act like you're in a normal chat client. I made an account and gave it a try.

1. what is this?

CR: What is GPT?

ChatGPT: GPT, or Generative Pretrained Transformer, is a type of language processing model developed by OpenAI. It uses deep learning techniques to generate natural language text that is similar to human writing. GPT is "pretrained" on a large corpus of text, which means that it has been trained on a large amount of data to learn the statistical patterns and structures of natural language. This enables it to generate text that is coherent and resembles human-written text, without being explicitly programmed for a specific task. GPT has been used in a variety of applications, such as language translation, text summarization, and dialogue generation.

2. How smart is this thing?

When I was in high school there was an old somewhat mechanical adding machine laying around in the corner of an office. A buddy and I asked the teacher about it and learned it's effectively a mechanical calculator. We liked how it clunked and rattled as it manually did calculations. Of course, we decided to throw it a curveball and asked it compute 5 divided by 0. The machine freaked out, then locked up and died. So, today I asked the AI bot...

CR: What happens if you divide by zero on an old adding machine?

ChatGPT: Dividing by zero is not possible on an adding machine or any other type of calculator. CR: What if it's a mechanical adding machine?

Not only will the calculation not produce a valid result, but it could also cause the calculator to malfunction or stop working altogether. If you need to perform a division operation and are unsure whether the divisor is zero, it is best to check the value first and make sure it is non-zero before proceeding with the calculation.

Well, it got that answer correct, down to the "stop working altogether" part.

3. To get a little silly

CR: Why does the honey badger not care?

ChatGPT: The honey badger is known for its fearless and tenacious behavior, which has earned it the reputation of not caring about anything. This is because the honey badger has a number of adaptations that make it well-suited for its aggressive and combative lifestyle. For example, it has thick skin and loose folds of skin around its neck that allow it to turn and twist easily, making it difficult for predators to grab and hold onto it. It also has sharp claws and teeth, which it uses to defend itself against attackers. Additionally, the honey badger has a high tolerance for pain and is able to withstand stings and bites from venomous animals. These adaptations allow the honey badger to live a successful life despite the many challenges it faces in its environment.

4. And even sillier

CR: Write a story about a honey badger who doesn't care.

ChatGPT: Once upon a time, in the heart of the African savannah, there lived a honey badger named Fred. Fred was a scrappy little creature, with thick, wiry fur and a fierce look in his eyes. He was known throughout the land as a fierce and fearless fighter, who never backed down from a challenge and never showed any fear.

Fred lived in a burrow at the base of a huge acacia tree, which he had dug out with his sharp claws. He was a solitary animal, preferring to spend his days alone, hunting and scavenging for food. He was an expert at finding tasty treats, and he was always on the lookout for anything he could eat.

One day, as Fred was out foraging for food, he came across a pack of wild dogs. The dogs were much larger than Fred, and they were ferocious hunters. But Fred didn't care. He bared his teeth and snarled at the dogs, daring them to come closer.

The dogs were taken aback by Fred's boldness, and they hesitated for a moment. But then, with a chorus of snarls and growls, they lunged at Fred, their jaws snapping at his thick skin.

But Fred was ready for them. He twisted and turned, dodging their bites and clawing at their eyes with his sharp claws. He fought with all his might, and soon the dogs were running for their lives, yelping in fear as Fred chased them off.

After the battle, Fred returned to his burrow, proud of his victory. He had faced down the fierce wild dogs and come out on top, showing once again that he was a force to be reckoned with. And as he settled down to rest, he knew that no matter what challenges came his way, he would never back down or show fear. Because Fred the honey badger didn't care.

I mostly like that the honey badger is named Fred.
