Tuna sashimi, fish empanadas and mezcal!
Good afternoon foodies and bon apetit!
Today I visited a restaurant called Mercado 24 which is Spanish for Market 24. I ordered something that isn't even on the menu. First, a little backstory on Mercado 24.
Guatemala City has 23 municipal markets where farmers, fishermen and butchers meet starting in the wee hours of the morning.
My friend, Chef Pablo Diaz, decided he wanted to open a restaurant that offered delicious food made from the freshest catch of the day with a gourmet feel. He wanted to keep a laid back atmosphere, so he dubbed his restaurant "the 24th market".
I'd like to add that Mercado 24 was listed among Latin Americas 50 Best restaurants along with Chef Sergio Diaz of Sublime, Diego Telles of Flor de Lis and Debbie Fadul of Diacá. All friends of mine of whom I'm very proud of.
Today, I ordered tuna sashimi with pesto and manchego cheese covered in red onions and garnished with peppermint leaves. This item is not on the menu, but I know Pablo makes it, so I asked if he could make me one. He said yes :)

After that, I ordered something that was on the menu: Fish empanadas. If you've ever had Argentine empanadas filler with beef and peppers, This is very similar. It has the same puffy pastry shell only it's filled with delicious seafood.
To wash it all down: a shot-glass of Tobalá mezcal, a smoky delicious beverage made from agave and brought here from Oaxaca, Mexico for me to enjoy
If you're ever in Guatemala City, I would highly recommend you visit 4 Grados Norte. It's downtown and it has plenty of amazing restaurants within walking distance. All four restaurants mentioned above are only a few blocks away. And half of them already accept Bitcoin as payment, which means if you know how to use @v4vapp , you can pay with #HIVE as well.
cheers!
No me hagas esto Alex!!!
Son las 23 horas aquí, ya no debo comer nada 😂
Well, my fault for opening a food post so now I want to eat 🤣🤣
Looks super tasty. That Tobalá mezcal also looks good, but I have never tried it.
Lo siento! 🙈
I'll tell you what, accept my apology this way: if you're ever visiting Guatemala City, I promise I will buy a round of Tobalá mezcal. It's super low calorie and light flavored. Not like drinking fire, I promise haha. Plus, I only had one 🥃
Deal 😇

😂
Empanadas! Oh yeah! Being able to pay with @v4vapp is great too.
Check this out, this is happening in my neigborhood ("the Bitcoin barrio"):

I usually like my Tuna Sashimi with just wasabi and soy sauce, but that looks delicious. I've had beef/pork empanadas here in the Philippines, but I haven't tried fish ones. The food looks great, thanks for sharing.
That tuna looks great with all the cheese surrounding, I like cheese but my stomach not so much, is Tobalá mezcal tequila? I look it up online says has 45% alcohol must be strong but early in the morning a shot for sure wakes you up
Haha I've only recently tried drinking Irish coffee on some weekends. Drinking mezcal in the morning is on a different level 😄
I've started to develop a taste for sipping mezcal (in the evening). It's good, it's light and it's cheap. $5 for this.
Ill be honest! Just the glazing of the sauce poured over that meal makes it look incredibly delicious 😂
Was it salty or sweet? It looks like it could perhaps be sweet😂
Yeah! The sauce was amazing! It's salty, like pesto but it has a sharp cheese mixed in.
Delicious!
I think you are so grateful to have him in your life. You can order something different from that menu list 😀
Tuna sashimi looks really different from general sashimi but indeed, looks yummy 🙂
I absolutely am! 😀
I'm not a chef myself, I just like to eat. I moved to a part of the city with some of the most amazing chefs in town and ended up making some friends. Sometimes you just get lucky.
